Culture

Though small in size, the culture of The Gambia is vast. River Gambia, locally known as simply 'the river', is central to The Gambia's diverse ethnic heritage. The Gambia celebrates a number of festivals, centred on the religious calendar. The official language, English, is widely heard while various tribal languages are spoken at home. A relaxed vibe permeates throughout Gambia giving a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Cuisine

Gambian cuisine delights the palate with a mix of spices and ingredients, often including peanuts, rice, fish, meat, onions, tomatoes and cassavas. Harvested oysters from The Gambia River are a regular feature in Gambian dishes.

Climate

The low geographical make-up of The Gambia gives rise to little regional climatic variation in its sub-tropical climate. The dry season falls November — May and wet season June — October. The latter sees sun-filled skies between short periods of rainfall quenching the thirst of plants as they burst into life.

Wildlife

Several habitats distinguish the rich wildlife of The Gambia, each flourishing with indigenous plants and animals. Mangrove forests transition the aquatic and terrestrial habits, extending from the Gambia River. With more than 100 species of mammals and an endless variety of birds, The Gambia is a feast for the eyes.
