A bit about Grand Baie

Things to do in Grand Baie

A super popular spot in northern Mauritius, Grand Baie was once a sleepy fishing village before being transformed into the tourism hub we see today. Visit modern restaurants, bars, boutiques and museums across the modern resort town.

Discover Cap Malheureux

We promise these locations aren't as sinister as they sound. Around 5km from Grand Baie sits the picturesque location of Cap Malheureux. Sitting at the most northerly point of the mainland, this enchanting small city offers attractions like Bain Boeuf Public Beach or take a tour around the quaint Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice Church or Red-Top Church site.

The Islets of Mauritius

Meanwhile, Gunner's Quoin, Round Island, Flat Island, Gabriel Island and Serpent Island rest just off the mainland. The coast around Mauritius is dotted with a collection of tiny atolls known as the Islets of Mauritius. Most of these specks of land are uninhabited but the quintet just off the northern coast are a hotbed of local biodiversity. Grab a quick boat tour of the islands and learn more about your surroundings.

Choice of beautiful beaches

The main Grand Baie beach is a popular spot for tourists and locals, however, if you venture to nearby areas you'll find even more idyllic stretches of sand. Trou-aux-Biches, Mont Choisy Beach and Pereybere Beach are all a short distance away and each offers a different viewpoint. With all those beaches comes a wealth of water sport options too. Get out into the ocean and try some snorkelling, diving, catamaran tours or kayaking among other fun tasks.

Eat, drink and be merry

When you've dried off from all that watery fun, you may want to head inland and check out the wealth of dining options on offer. The Grand Baie restaurants showcase fine Mauritian cuisine which dances on the palate through a range of influences. Local dishes are truly unique as, like the national flag, they celebrate a range of colours and influences. Get out of your resort one day or night and stroll along Royal Road, here you'll find the finest restaurants and street food in Mauritius.

Shop 'til you drop

With it being a cosmopolitan resort town, you'll also find that one of the best things to do in Grand Baie is shopping. From the designer boutiques of La Croisette Shopping Mall to the authentic halls of the Grand Baie Bazaar. You can find anything you need on the streets of this town. In the bustling walkways of the bazaar you'll find hundreds of stalls dedicated to everything from street food to crafts and souvenirs. Some of the vendors in this market have been plying their trade for years.
