You’ll also find that lavish four-course meals adorn the tables every evening. Each menu has been curated with only the finest local ingredients, according to seasonality and accessibility. Wine pairings taken from local wineries help each course sing on the palate.

If the decadence of the main restaurant ever becomes too much, then head to the Viennese Café where are host of warm and cold snacks are waiting to sate your hunger pangs. From fresh sandwiches through to recently baked cakes and pastries, it’s a wonderful palate cleanser.

Itinerary
Day 1 – Budapest (Embark)
Arrive in the stunning city of Budapest and board the S.S. Maria Theresa ready to start your European journey of discovery.
Day 2 – Budapest
Choose from a couple of enchanting excursions as you get to know your take off point a little better. On return you’ll be greeted by the Captain’s Welcome Reception and Dinner.
Budapest Panoramic Highlights with Opera House Visit
Take a tour of some of Budapest’s best known sites. Andrassy Avenue, Heroes’ Square, Franz Liszt Memorial House, the House of Terror, City Park, and the superb Castle District before your trip culminates in a visit to the Opera House and a private concert exclusive to Uniworld passengers.
Budapest Walk with Local Treats
Go on a merry jaunt around the city on foot. While you may be experiencing Budapest on two legs, it will be your tastebuds that do the bulk of the exploring. Start in a food bazaar in the Jewish District before stopping for a beer and some langos in a ruin pub. Then round your day off in the sweetest way with an exquisite strudel in the Great Market Hall.
Jewish Budapest (£)
While the other excursions may give you a brief introduction to life in the Jewish District of Budapest, this tour allows full immersion. Try a cacophony of kosher delights as you mill about the places to be.
Day 3 – Bratislava, Vienna
Private Mozart and Strauss Concert
The Mecca of classical music, Vienna has played host to such infamous talents as Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, Schubert, Mahler, and Brahms, to name a few. Take in a gorgeous evening of chamber music performed by some of the city’s world-class professional.
Then you can choose how you would prefer to get to know Bratislava.
Bratislava – Small But Precious Walking Tour
Strike out on foot and take in the wonders of the Slovakian capital. Gaze in wonder as the architecture shifts from gothic medieval through to Baroque and finally art deco, before your eyes. Pass over Coronation Square and the National Theatre to St Martin’s Cathedral where 19 Habsburg rulers were crowned.
After you’ve explored the square you’ll be walked through Michael’s Gate and into the beautiful Old Town. Once you’ve marvelled at the aged scenery you’re free to explore the shops and restaurants.
“Let’s Go” Hike to Bratislava Castle
Pull on your walking shoes and explore the grand building which dominates the skyline over Bratislava. Savour the views out over the city below before heading down to explore it some more. A local guide will introduce you to points of interest like UFO Bridge, the House of the Good Shepherd and the statue of Čumil, the sewage worker leaning out of a manhole.
Day 4 – Vienna
Continue your adventure of discovery in Vienna. From sweet artworks through to artistic sweets, the “City of Waltzes” is ready to dazzle with your choice of excursions.
“Morning with the Masters” at the Vienna Art History Museum
A dazzling destination where the building itself is just as beguiling as the masterpieces it houses. You’ll get their early and have the benefit of an art historian taking you around the notable works in residence, including infamous pieces by Rembrandt, Pieter Bruegel, Vermeer, Raphael, Velazquez, Rubens and Van Eyck to name but a few.
Your historian will then take you on to the Kunstkammer galleries where Benvenuto Cellini’s legendary salt cellar resides.
The salt cellar remains the only gold sculpture by Cellini to have survived to present day. You’ll then bring your awesomely artistic tour to an end with a visit to Cupola Hall – the architectural highlight of the building.
Vienna – Imperial City Highlights
At only 150 years old, Ring Street is still a new part of the city when you consider the ancient credentials of Vienna. Explore Parliament, City Hall, the Vienna State Opera, as well as a plethora of grand palaces and museums.
Then you’ll get a true sense of how modern Vienna merges the beauty of its past with the excitement of its future. Stroll along the boulevard on Kärntner Street, taking in the State Opera and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. On your way past the elegant shops on the Graben and the Kohlmarkt take in the dazzling street performers and modern businesses which have taken up residence in the grand antiquated architecture.
Vienna’s Music and Composers
If you missed the chance to explore Vienna’s classical music history yesterday, then this tour is unmissable. More of an all-encompassing look at the music as whole in Vienna, this excursion starts with present day artists keeping the city’s enviable legacy alive.
From there you’ll head to St Stephen’s Cathedral to marvel at an altar painting by Albrecht Dürer. Then it’s on to the only surviving residence of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Stroll around the apartment and feel the great musician’s inspiration all around you.
Schönbrunn Palace After Hours Visit (£)
Enjoy a guided tour of Empress Maria Theresa’s favourite palace, without the hustle and bustle of the midday crowds. As the doors close to the public on this glorious palace, you’ll be able to marvel at the grand staterooms which reflect the luxury of bygone eras.
Day 5 – Dürnstein, Melk
Melk Abbey with Library Visit
If you’re something of a history buff or bookworm, this is the stop for you. Melk Abbey is a wonderful example of baroque architecture with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. But within its 900-year-old fortified walls lies one of the most celebrated libraries of all time.
Benedictine monks created more than 1,20 manuscripts, sometimes committing their whole lives to siring just one volume. Today the cache contains approximately 100,000 volumes, with more than 80,000 works completed before the 1800s.
Dürnstein Wine Estate Visit with Tasting
One for the wine lovers. Explore the delicious tastes of the Wachau Valley as part of Uniworld’s MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® campaign. Celebrated for its Reisling and Veltliner, the Nikolaihof estate’s 1995 Reisling Vinothek, bottled in 2012, scored 100 points in The Wine Advocate. Becoming the region’s first ever 100-point wine.
But the unique experience at Nikolaihof doesn’t begin and end with the product. There aren’t many places in the world where you can sample delicious wine in a deconsecrated 15th-century chapel, on a site where the oldest buildings date back to the Roman era.
Dürnstein Village and Saffron Workshop
Get to know the stunningly quaint village of Dürnstein, and one of the world’s most expensive cooking materials, a little better. Saffron crocuses were first introduced to the hillsides of the Wachau Valley by crusaders back in the 12th century.
However, after it disappeared from the landscape in the early 20th century, ecologist Bernard Kaar reintroduced the plant. He then spent years researching the history of saffron before going on to cultivate the world’s only biodynamically certified saffron. On the tour you can try a range of saffron-infused products from chocolate to jams, as well as vinegars and honey.
Day 6 – Linz (Salzburg)
Linz Town and Country: Linzertorte and Cider Farm Visit
Another MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® excursion. Get to know the glittering winter wonderland of Linz a little better by heading out on a walking tour of all the top sights. Stop for a bite to eat and coffee at Konditorei Jindrak, home of the original Linzer Torte. Sample a delicious coffee and one of these renowned buttery pastries made with ground nuts and filled with fruit preservatives, topped with a lattice crust.
Following the delicious stop-off you’ll then head for a countryside cider farm. Enjoy a lunch of organically produced cider and food which has benefitted from the farm’s careful approach to cultivation.
Day 7 – Passau
The final stop on your magical mystery tour down the Danube. Passau is a meeting place for three rivers and nearly three countries too. A town with a geography and positioning like that is sure to throw up a cultural smorgasbord of things to discover.
“Let’s Go” Bicycle Ride Along the Inn River
The Inn River Bike Path follows the river from its source in the city of Innsbruck down to Passau taking in three countries along its way. A perfect way to enjoy the city and get some exercise, the tour will take in the Inn River valley just outside Passau.
“Let’s Go” Hike Along the Ilz River
A similarly active escape along another famous tributary of the Danube. You’ll start your hike along the serene stream in Hals-Hochstein, before climbing a steep hill and stopping off to take in the stunning views out over the forested Bavarian hillside. The four-mile stomp will eventually loop back around to Hals criss-crossing the river as you go.
Whether you choose the walking tour or the cycling adventure, you’ll be ready for a good dinner afterwards. So the Captain’s Farewell Reception and Dinner will be a great way to round off another delightful day on the dazzling Danube.
Day 8 – Passau (Disembark)
Say your goodbyes and make your way off the ship. But instead of heading straight for the airport, you might like to explore more of Passau. A fascinating cultural melting pot, there’s plenty to discover.
