Planning Your Ultimate Jamaican Family Holiday

Let’s be real, there is an incredible amount of stuff to do for families in Jamaica. So getting everything in on one trip can be a challenge. But the key is to plan your itinerary before embarking on your adventure.

This 7-day guide will take you on a journey through some of the island’s most popular destinations, offering a mix of beach relaxation, thrilling activities, and cultural experiences.

Remember, you can (and probably should) customise this itinerary to suit your family’s interests and preferences. But we know that the activities and locations we’ve included are must-sees.

Getting Around On Our 7-Day Jamaica Itinerary for Families

The island is super accessible with various transportation options to suit your needs. If you’re comfortable driving, renting a car gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace and discover hidden gems along the way.

The great thing about renting a car in Jamaica is that they drive on the left side. That means you can spend more time hitting the road and less time acclimatising.

Alternatively, you can opt for organised tours, which often include transportation and knowledgeable guides. Taxis are also readily available, especially in tourist areas. However, these options can become more expensive than renting a vehicle in the long run.

Now that we know why and how to get around in Jamaica, let’s get into the itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival and Acclimatisation in Montego Bay

Welcome to Jamaica! After landing in Montego Bay, it’s time to get settled and ease into the island vibes. Montego Bay, affectionately known as “MoBay,” is famous for its beautiful beaches and lively culture. Kick off your adventure by exploring the local area.

Exploring Montego Bay’s Hip Strip and Doctor’s Cave Beach

After checking into your family-friendly Jamaica resort, head to the “Hip Strip”—a bustling area filled with shops, eateries, and live reggae music. Perfect for an evening stroll and some quick bites.

Don’t miss Doctor’s Cave Beach too. A safe and calm spot for the kids to splash around in the crystal-clear shallow water while you relax on the soft, white sand. This beach is the perfect introduction to the natural beauty of Jamaica. You’ll feel like you’re living in a postcard.

Day 2: Adventure in Ocho Rios

Just an hour and a half from Montego Bay, Ocho Rios is nicknamed the “Adventure Capital of Jamaica”. And now it’s your playground for day two, packed with adventure that’ll thrill both kids and adults.

Visiting Dunn’s River Falls and Park

Your first stop in Ocho Rios is the iconic Dunn’s River Falls. This majestic waterfall offers a hands-on experience where families can climb the cascading falls hand-in-hand, creating lifelong memories. If climbing isn’t your thing, you can splash around in the natural pools at the base of the falls—either way, you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking tropical beauty.

Family Fun at Mystic Mountain

Next up, head to Mystic Mountain for a day of adventure. The kids will love the SkyExplorer, a chairlift that takes you high above the rainforest canopy, offering stunning views of the island. Once at the top, zip lining and the bobsled ride (inspired by Jamaica’s famous Olympic team) are must-dos! It’s an adrenaline-pumping experience that’s also incredibly family-friendly.

Day 3: The Wonders of Negril

On day three, it’s time to head west to Negril, known for its laid-back vibe and natural beauty. This is the perfect pitstop before we head on to the (reasonable) hustle and bustle of the capital. But what should be doing in Negril with a day to spare?

Relaxing on Seven Mile Beach

Negril’s Seven Mile Beach is a paradise for families. With its long stretch of soft sand and shallow, calm waters, it’s a great spot for the kids to swim safely while you relax under the sun. Beach vendors selling fresh fruit and cold drinks make this spot even better for an easy-going family day. Negril also has plenty of water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding if you’re feeling more adventurous.

Sunset at Rick’s Café

No trip to Negril is complete without catching the famous sunset at Rick’s Café. Not only is it a prime spot to see the sun dip into the ocean, but brave souls can also leap from the cliffs into the deep, blue waters below. If you prefer to keep your feet dry, grab a seat and enjoy the music, good vibes, and unbeatable views.

Day 4: Cultural Immersion in Kingston

Kingston, Jamaica’s capital, is rich in culture, history and energy. It’s a great place to introduce your family to the deeper side of the island. Also, if you have any budding historians in your clan, this is the place for them.

The Bob Marley Museum Visit

A visit to Kingston isn’t complete without stopping by the Bob Marley Museum. Located in Marley’s former home, the museum offers an insightful look into the life and legacy of the reggae legend. It’s an educational and fun experience that will leave both you and the kids grooving to the sounds of Jamaica’s most famous musician.

Historical Exploration of Port Royal

Continuing the historical flavour of your Kingston experience, Port Royal was once known as the “wickedest city on Earth.” It was a notorious pirate hub, and today, families can explore its ruins and learn about the infamous pirates who once ruled these waters. What kids don’t want to hear tales about swashbuckling pirates?!

Day 5: Nature’s Marvel at Port Antonio

On day five, we’re making the two-hour journey northeast from Kingston to Port Antonio, where Jamaica’s natural beauty takes centre stage.

Rafting on the Rio Grande

Rafting on the Rio Grande is a unique, peaceful and scenic way to explore Jamaica’s lush countryside. Your family will love floating down the river on a traditional bamboo raft while soaking in the tranquility of the rainforest.

Keep the noise down and you might be able to spot some of Jamiaca’s incredible wildlife doing its thing in the surrounding greenery. It’s a super relaxing yet exciting way to experience the island’s wild side.

Exploring the Blue Lagoon

Next, sticking with the watery theme, visit the Blue Lagoon. A stunning turquoise pool perfect for swimming and exploring by boat. The serene atmosphere and cool waters make it a must-visit if you’re seeking a blend of adventure and relaxation from your holiday activities.

Day 6 & Day 7: Exploring the South Coast – YS Falls & Black River Safari

The final days of your trip can be spent exploring the less-trodden but equally enchanting South Coast of the island. Something of a hidden gem, the South offers unspoiled beauty and authentic island charm. It’s the perfect escape for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Adventure at YS Falls

Officially opened in 1992, YS Falls is a more secluded waterfall experience than Dunn’s River, with natural pools perfect for swimming and zip-lining adventures for the more daring. The surrounding gardens and greenery offer a quieter setting – perfect for a family picnic.

Wildlife Watching on the Black River

Finish your adventure with a Black River Safari, where you’ll cruise along the island’s longest river, spotting crocodiles, exotic birds, and other wildlife. It’s an exciting and educational way to end your family holiday in Jamaica.
