Surfing

Earning the nickname of European Hawaii for it’s quality of surf tells you all you need to know! There’s a range of surf spots across Lanzarote for surfers of all levels.

Whatever time you find yourself in Lanzarote, you can enjoy the surf. However September up to December is preferred by the advanced surfers due to the bigger waves.

Beginners often sway towards Famara beach as the waves are calmer. You will also find surf schools on the beach, so if you are looking to start out you can rent their equipment. It’s also divided into several different surf spots. The centre area of the beach if where new starters can head to, whereas the experienced surfers can make their way to San Juan where the waves are fast and powerful.

On the other hand, El Quemao is home to the island’s most famous wave. With hollow and powerful waves that open on the left and right, it’s a surfer’s paradise.

With stunning underwater settings and a whole biodiversity waiting to be discovered. The calm and warm waters set the perfect scene for any diver, new or experienced.

Undoubtedly the Museum Atlantico, an underwater museum, is a must see on your dive list! As Europe’s only underwater museum, this unique site has different experiences available depending on your level. If you don’t have diving license, there is still the opportunity to dive around the museum.

Puerto Del Carmen, Playa Chicha is thought have some of the best dive sites in Lanzarote. One of the most famous dives is the Blue Hole. With beautiful marine life in the bay, before heading through the Blue Hole and into a cave full of wildlife, it’s truly a magnificent discovery.

Windsurfing/kitesurfing

Once again, Lanzarote comes up top in Europe , this time for the best windsurfing conditions. The trade winds on the island make it an amazing spot for windsurfing practice.

Playa Las Cucharas in Costa Teguise is the most popular spot for wind propelled sports in Lanzarote. With several schools and wind surf shops, help is around if you need it! The PWA World Windsurfing Tour has also stopped off in Costa Teguise too in previous years.

For those looking to try out a new sport and are looking towards windsurfing, kitesurfing is a great alternative and easier to learn. Similar to surfing, Famara beach is a hotspot for learners. With plenty of space and steady winds, you’ll be whooshing with your kite in no time.

Summer months bring consistent waves which beginners may find easier, however winter months bring the epic waves.

Triathlon

Looking for a challenge? Well, Lanzarote is home to the Volcano Triathlon, the oldest triathlon race in Spain! Since 1984 this race has been held by Club La Santa and welcomes everyone, even World Champions.

Swim, bike and run your way to the finish line.  If you finish within the top ten, you can win a cash prize, and every participant receives a t-shirt and a medal – how about that?!

You start off the race with a 1,5km swim in a salt water lagoon at Club La Santa. Then, a one 40km loop course on your bike which also ends at Club La Santa. Finally, a two loop course of running for 10km, starting at the Stadium.

The whole race has an incredible atmosphere, so if you are fit enough to take part – we recommend booking a trip to Lanzarote during the race!

Hiking

Beautiful, volcanic landscape provides the best kind of hiking trails. You’ll see a showcase of panoramic views and fantastic scenery. Pair that with the good weather, and you’re in for a treat.

Depending on your fitness level, what kind of hike you are looking for, and what views you want to take in – there are different trails across the whole of Lanzarote.

Hang gliding/ paragliding

As we’ve said previously, the trade winds in Lanzarote make it a prime spot for any kind of sport needing wind power. Hang gliding and paragliding is an extremely popular sport on the island due to this.

Once again, any level of expertise can enjoy this sport. If you are completely new to the sport, you can learn as you go. Or, if you’re a pro, you will love it here!

As the island doesn’t have huge built-up areas, there are plenty of spaces to set off and land into. If you are going with a group of people and need help finding the best spots, you can talk to guides who will help you with setting off and being at the landing spot when you get back.

Whilst in the air you can take in the absolutely mesmerising landscapes and enjoy the warm weather.

It can be a scary sport to try, however if you want to test the waters, there are programs around for all of your needs. You don’t have to take to the skies alone straightaway!
