Chichen Itza is an ancient Mayan city that plays host to a number of monuments and temples. The main attraction is El Castillo or The Temple of Kulkulcan.
Even more impressive than the build quality of the main temple is the fact that when the sun sets, triangles of golden light are beamed on to the northern staircase to portray a feathered serpent slithering down the pyramid.
2. Walk The Hotel Zone
The Hotel Zone, as the name would suggest, is an area of Cancun that is home to row after row of high-end resorts. These resorts spill out onto some of the most incredible beaches in the country.
With all its modernity and bars, shops, and restaurants, the Hotel Zone couldn’t be further from the scenes at Chichen Itza. But it still makes for a wonderful few hours strolling the streets and taking in the sights and smells.

Unlike any of the other ancient sites we’ve covered so far the ruins in Coba, which lie around 46 minutes inland from Tulum offer you the chance to actually scurry up the temple steps. The main area of the site, known as Nohoch Mul, is home to the largest pyramid – Ixmoja.
Ixmoja is around 40 metres tall and you have the opportunity to clamber up the vast steps to summit the ancient structure. Be warned though, those 120 stone steps are steeper than you think. We’d recommend hats, suncream and plenty of water for this one.

Back in the day, Mitla was run almost exclusively by priests who filled their time with human sacrifices. Many of the gruesome offerings to appease the ancient deities were living organs carved from the person and tossed into a fire.
The super interesting thing about this site is the, unnervingly named, Column of Death. This relic, located inside one of the buildings at Mitla, is said to predict when you will die. Legend has it that if you hug the column and felt it move, you weren’t long for this world. Unfortunately, centuries of hugging has taken its toll and the now dilapidated column is currently off-limits.

But you don’t need to get involved with all that, it’s much more comfortable and safer to pull up a pew in La Perla. A bar across from the cliffs where you can eat, drink, be merry and shield your eyes from the death-defying stunts.
84. Visit Ek Balam And El Castillo
If you’re staying in the Hotel Zone in Cancun and you fancy a day away from the beachfront. You could always make the 25-minute trip to the Ek Balam ruins. Here you’ll find an ancient site, unlike those at Tulum and Chichen Itza.
The quieter site at Ek Balam means you can have a much more immersive experience on your day out. Plus, the main event is that you can actually climb to the top of “El Castillo” (the main pyramid) and take in the spectacular views over the canopy – just like in Coba.
